Melancholia (2008) — Lav Diaz and Emancipated Cinema
Lav Diaz is an independent filmmaker from the Philippines and a significant voice in the slow cinema movement, or as he calls "emancipated cinema." Diaz's work is characterized by black-and-white digital photography, minimal camera movement, attention to the sociopolitical realities of the Philippines, and extremely long runtimes. Melancholia is Diaz's seven and a half hour study on the fractured Filipino identity. This video discusses the liberating potential for slow cinema, long runtimes, and minimalism in film.

Battleship Potemkin Anti-Montage (or Retracing Odessa Steps)
Переглядів 6026 місяців тому
The Odessa steps massacre sequence from Battleship Potemkin is one of the most influential, celebrated, and studied scenes in cinema. The sequence best illustrates director Sergei Eisenstein's Montage theory as contrasting shots are juxtaposed with one another to create a unifying picture. Because I am a pretentious thinker, I can't help but ask what this scene would look like if it were stripp...

I don't understand why Leon would be responsible for any wrong doing, or why Mathilda would be judged for developing feelings. It seems to me that this film handled that level of complications perfectly. It is a story of a young girl learning to love, and a older man learning to love. His love is platonic, and her love is new and hormonal. At no point in the film does he ever think its it's an option to take that relationship to a physical level And even if he did feel it, it's still not a problem of his character. Emotions are complicated. The film, even the extended cut, really showed Lean to know where the line is. And it also exemplified where Mathilda was at. She left the film holding the bunny (her love for her brother), and the plant (Her love for Leon). Nobody should be upset by any of this story. Let's lean into a young girl's attraction to an older man... She learned the right lesson (showed her love through a stuffed bunny and a plant), and he already understood that it was wrong. And the film explains that he was simple. So not only did he do the right thing, but it's understood that he was tempted and still did the right thing with his simple mentality. The theme was heavy, but ultimately the message was respectable.

This movie has many edgy moments But there is real life emotional aspects adopted All i see is a stepfather who steps in and provides a safe space no matter what Yes, these days there's a thin line because of the Phub lifestyle 99% of people has become familiar with. But this movie does not hints to any of that.

I find post 60s Goddard as a bore. Way too intellectual, saying all these profound sounding thoughts that don't mean a thing to real life. Yes, TV back then and now was pretty superficial but what's the solution? Goddard will drone on and on about what an image means (see Letter to Jane where one image is broken down for an hour). His Histories du cinema was pointless. Make the cinema you day we need, rather than talk it to death. I'll take Allen any day in spite of him being a nostalgist and repetitive (putting aside his personal life and potential moral short comings).

The American culture utterly lacks the family culture and with it, close no da and relations, let alone relations and bonds with extended relatives. The Mediterranean culture is predominantly about family and relations, bonds and unconditional love. Looking after each other and not disowning anyone in the name of “individuality” or “independence”. The American so called of a culture is degenerate and corrupt. “Adults” don’t even know how to handle individual situations and how to raise offspring. There’s no discipline and strict rules in families, and also no genuine love and caring. Americans, among which I especially and particularly include Canadians, are not incompetent with and towards the youth, but completely uncaring, pretentious, distant, stranger like, one dimensional and robotic. So it’s the youth that suffers the consequences. Broken families, absent “fathers”, incompetent mothers and all that jazz. American and Canadian youngsters are far more depressed and hopeless than anyone thinks or believes. There are many youngsters, some promising and studying at good universities, that commit suicide. There are youngsters that live in absolute despair, poverty and misery, because their otherwise very well of families have disowned them, remarried to very mean women or men that don’t want them, and more stories. These are all facts. I personally have known such people. The fact that I couldn’t do anything to help them was enough to depress myself in turn. This is no joking matter and absolutely must be pointed to and improved and bettered. Everyone, from parents, to whole families, to extended families, to other authorities including governments, are responsible for improving the ongoing situation that is literally killing their own youth. Scientifically understanding them is absolute but not enough on its own. Drastic measures are a need.

I adore the music video for Windowlicker. Particularly the part before the song even starts which nails the satire of 90s rap culture that Cunningham was going for with one swear word ever 2 seconds. It’s just that fun back-and-forth between the cast that makes me wish that Cunningham would go on to direct a feature film. The song also slaps as well

The peasant women depicted in the movie here are not witches and are not sexually liberated. They are celebrating a religious festival Kupalnocka that invokes sexual rights one night of the year as part of the religious ceremony. They are just regular peasant women as the fleeing woman fleeing for her life in the next scene depicts. Andrei starts the scene stating that this is the witche's Sabbat. He returns to the group later mentioning nothing of sin or of Satanism. He instead talks about the hard life and toil of the people basically I think explaining this is their way of blowing off steam. Intentionally he tried to prevent his group from notifying the authorities. However, the old babushka already had notified them. Perhaps she is the incel figure you are referring to? Andrei is clearly saddened by the situation and I suspect felt shame from not helping the fleeing woman later which is perhaps in part why he later takes action protecting the other woman from the assault from the Tartar. I think this scene is meant to in part explain the artist's inspiration regarding how their iconography took a livelier tone from the Greek iconography. The ceremony has some obvious similarities to Christian practices. The burnt offering striking the monk's boat seems like a symbolic death of paganism in Russia. The righteous persecution of the pagans is a parallel to the righteous persecution of Christianity in Soviet times. I think this is a parallel point that Tarkovsky was making. The director gives us a view into Andrei's humanity. It's the psychology of a voyeur, an artist observing nature to put down on the canvas.

I agree that the holy incel label fits if we isolate that particular setting or epoch. I would add, however, that there is always a way to explain why something that someone else believes to be their free choice is actually socially imposed on them, and it's often based on our labels that they experience their choice as free. For example, if someone is declared as an incel, they might perceive society as expecting people to be sexual, and therefore, experience abstinence as the freeest act.

Destino was only finished by Disney (in a bad poorly animated way) because Salvador Dali's as sketches and art for the film were requested by his estate. Because the art would only belong to Disney if the film was made. I went to the premiere in LA. They had his attention and were using the short as a way to sell his art. Very gross as is Disney's ideology.

I have had an argument today with someone who believes in the Mandela effect but she got me with the song we are the champions by queen. I really did think it ended with of the world and I sung it, but then I said but even though I think it should be there the music doesn't allow for you to put it in so that must have changed and she nodded. I now realise it never did end like that. It's just cos in the rest of the song it ends like that you just put it in. Also when live he would offer not say of the world until right at the end of the music so you mix live with recorded. This person is a flat earther so I should have known better. About froot of the loom in the UK we would never use a horn of plenty with a load of fruit, hence why I never remember it being there. To me the Mandela one looks stupid cos it's not something I've seen before so I can see how things make some think one way.

The 5 films deal with sexual/ gender differentiation from both an individual and a cultural levels, including the sexual underlayment of hierarchy and power. The Cremaster muscle is the first physical definition of possible gender. If you hear him talk, you just get confused, but watch the films in their entirety and you get it. This is so relevant currently. He brought beauty to contemporary experimental film-making. And each thing created for the films, each prop and set piece, is visual art as well, and he hired professional film and theatre people to do the production work, to make it sort of competitive with normal Hollywood films. By the way, most people interpret the blimps as ovaries.

I am actually floored this movie is not brought up more often in the light you are discussing. I recently watched a video essay on how L*lita was an insanely constructive piece of art designed to be critical of p*doph*lia, but was not seen that way. I felt strongly about Leon the Professional, how it was in the same vein with the only redeeming factor being Leon's complete refusal to touch Mathilda. I was absolutely shocked to see the reverence of this film by so many people and began questioning their own values. After watching that video essay, I thought somebody HAD to have made one on Leon the Professional by now - after all, it's literally on the imdb top 100. But yours is the most popular, and admittedly I was skeptical of the perspective you might take, and I'm so supportive of what I see you writing to other viewers. Haven't even watched the video yet. Just wanted to share how I found you and that I'm already excited to see where this goes. EDIT: This was amazing. I particularly loved the introduction with Besson. It provides the concept of an unreliable director when telling a story about complicated morals. It's important to establish this moving forward so we can start to view the film for what it really is - Besson's attempt to justify his predatory behavior. The film portrays the mental gymnastics it would take for the "perfect situation" of touching a young girl in such a self snitching way. This film is gross. Thank you for making this. This kind of content needs to be spoken about more. I'm really interested in the other films you mention in this video and would love to see your takes on those.

She realizes his impotence isn’t her fault, and all that betrayal, the double standard, erupts in the blistering argument that turns Vinny to jelly. The actors are on fire, playing off each other, totally in the moment. The whole movie is classic filmmaking, about more than itself.
